Research Interests

My research interests are in the areas of Fault Tolerance and Distributed Computing. My research goal is to investigate innovative fault tolerant mechanisms for distributed computation, focusing on the following aspects:

Fault Tolerant Virtual Machines: My collaborators and I are investigating novel fault tolerant mechanisms to perform efficient checkpoint-restart operations for virtual machines and a cluster of virtual machines. We aim to provide fault tolerance operations to High Performance Computing at the virtual machine level in a highly transparent manner, where chechpoint-restart are conducted by the hypervisors without application or Guest OS modifications.

A Dynamic Group Membership Protocol to capture Resource and Network Availability: I have been studying the development of a group membership protocol to capture dynamic behaviors of resource and network availabilities, and the development of a runtime system to host this protocol.

Current Projects

The Virtual Cluster-based Coordinated checkpointing Protocol (VCCP) project is an attempt to build a "virtual cluster" framework to represent a cluster of virtual machines, and incorporate a coordinated checkpointing mechanism into it. Mr. Nathapol Saragol, my former student, is the lead architect of this project. VCCP allows coordinated checkpointing to operate transparently on the virtual cluster without application, operating systems, or hardware modifications.

The Checkpointing-Enabled Virtual Machine (CEVM) project is a project to create an efficient, hypervisor-based checkpointing mechanism exploiting available resources in multiprocessing environments. We are investigating a new technique called Thread-based Live Checkpointing to efficiently perform checkpointing for a virtual machine.

Past Projects

The DOE Science Grid project is a collaborative project under the DOE Scientific Discovery Through Advanced Computing (SciDAC) program intended to create a persistent distributed computing infrastructure across DOE sites. (http://www.doesciencegrid.org and http://www.doegrids.org)

The Earth System Grid project is a SciDAC project that integrates supercomputers with large-scale data and analysis servers located at numerous national laboratories and research centers to create a powerful environment for next generation climate research (http://www.earthsystemgrid.org)

Scalable Network of Workstations (SNOW) created a distributed computing framework consisting of compilation and runtime systems to support checkpointing and process migration in heterogeneous distributed environments. My contributions in SNOW provides foundations for the High Performance Computing Mobility (HPCM) Middleware project at IIT (http://meta.cs.iit.edu/~hpcm).

Migration-point based PVM (MpPVM) is an extended version of the PVM software to support heterogeneous process migration for PVM applications. MpPVM is developed to investigate performance benefits of process migration for parallel processing on a non-dedicated network of workstations.
